Montreal, QC – August 26, 2025 – Doctors Against Racism and Antisemitism (DARA) expresses dismay at the University of Sherbrooke’s decision to admit a student who served as the lead moderator of a Discord forum filled with antisemitic, misogynistic, racist, and extremist content. This student began medical school at University of Sherbrooke on Monday.

As moderator, he was responsible for both authoring violent hate speech targeting identifiable groups including Jews, women, African Canadians and LGBTQ2+, and for permitting the circulation of antisemitic propaganda.  Entrusting such an individual with medical training is a violation of the moral integrity of the medical profession.

A Sample of the Posts Authored by the Student Himself:

• Regarding admission to medical school, “Guys est-ce que j’ai mes chances? S’il est Gay + Black + Juif + Trans ça va.” “Guys, do I have a chance? If he’s Gay + Black + Jewish + Trans, it’s fine.”
• In response to LGBTQ+ content, he posted an image of a locker full of rifles.
•  In response to another user writing “Fini le Québec on domine soon” (“Quebec will be dominated soon”), he replied: “l’État islamique au Québec” — “The Islamic State in Quebec.”
•  “En parlant des juifs, you doxx them, I hunt them. En vrai c’est une meilleure carrière que med.” — “Speaking of Jews, you doxx them, I hunt them. Honestly, it’s a better career than medicine.”
• “Vote pour moi comme chef du bloc pour que je légalise capital punishment pour ces negs.” — “Vote for me as head of the bloc so I can legalize capital punishment for these n*****s.”

• A reference to a potential medical school interview question “Anne Frank est cachée dans le grenier… les SS viennent frapper… dites leur de gazer le rat dans le grenier au plus vite.”  “Anne Frank is hiding in the attic… the SS knock on the door… gas the rat in the attic as quickly as possible.”

All Medical Schools Were Warned

In May 2025 (before the medical school acceptances were sent out), DARA formally alerted every Canadian medical school to the existence of this Discord forum and warned that applicants participating in it would be seeking admission. The University of Sherbrooke has a duty to protect the public by ensuring its admissions process selects candidates who embody compassion, moral integrity, and respect for human dignity. Patients deserve integrity. Trainees deserve safety. The University of Sherbrooke has failed both.

DARA calls for immediate and urgent action:

• The University of Sherbrooke must immediately suspend the student’s admission and launch a transparent review.

• Quebec’s medical leadership especially the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ) must publicly affirm that antisemitism, misogyny, and extremist ideology have no place in medicine or in medical training.

This past Saturday, over Shabbat, JNF Canada learned that its charitable status had been revoked despite court proceedings currently underway.

We had appealed while at the same time striving to reach an agreement with the CRA on a constructive path forward, while our overtures to have a dialogue in order to negotiate were consistently rebuffed.

In the coming days, we will ask for an application for judicial review until our case is heard on its merits.

On behalf of DARA, we would like to thank Mr. Craig Roxborough and Ms. Alex Wong for taking the time and hearing our concerns. As we discussed, our concerns relate to the adjudication and enforcement of CPSO’s forthcoming social media policy.
 
As discussed by Professor Irwin Cotler and others, the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance) definition is helpful in trying to understand/define what anti-Jewish prejudice (antisemitism) is.  The IHRA definition is an anchor as an interpretative tool.  Despite its non-binding nature, its acceptance by various jurisdictions, including the Provincial Govt. and the International Council of Imams, its adoption gives it some weight in the attempt to formulate a policy that is aimed at (among other things) protecting Jewish students/faculty from antisemitic displays coming from CPSO Members.
 
We strongly believe that the adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism would serve the CPSO’s interest, as it would provide a framework by which anti-Jewish racism can be adjudicated and enforced, where applicable. Accordingly, we urge the CPSO to adopt the IHRA definition to help inform such policy and adjudication.

At an unprecedented town hall event, supported by 34 communal organizations and synagogues from all the major religious denominations of Judaism, a panel of students and professors called on the entire Jewish community to contact the University’s administration and demand the following two actions:

• That the University begin enforcing its own by-laws and policies to protect Jewish students on campus;
• That the University adopt the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism.
